Welcome to the ESOL Level 6 Wiki for Word Study!
Use this wiki to list important vocabulary or key terms from your reading. Scroll down this page to see
instructions on how to use the wiki.

Enter words according to the chapter in which you find them. Open the appropriate chapter number by clicking the link from the Navigation on the left of this page. Then create an entry for your key term. Enter terms in alphabetical order.

When you create an entry for a key term, list:
  1. The vocabulary word you are learning.
  2. The part of speech for the word.Words may take many different forms. A word can be a noun in or sentence and a verb in another. The part of speech you put on your word card should match how the word is used in the passage you are studying.
  3. The word in use. Write the word in a sentence as it is used in the chapter you are studying. This section is very important as words change not only their form, but also their meanings depending on how they are used in sentences.
  4. The definition of the word. Use the definition that matches the word form and meaning that are used in the sentence from your reading source. You can use classroom dictionaries for definitions or go to these websites.
  5. Provide an example sentence. You can get the sentence from the dictionary or make one up.
  6. (Optional) You can add other information to the word cards. You can add pictures or videos. This gives you and others a more complete idea of the meaning of the word you are studying.
  7. (Optional) Collocations - These are example sentences of how the word is usually used by native English speakers. Remember that words must always come from a context, so a collocation shows how a word is used in a context. For example, the word "saw" can be used in the past tense as in the sentence, "I saw the train leave the station at 3:14." The word can also be used as a noun for the tool used to cut wood as in the sentence, "Please hand me the saw so I can trim that board."
There are two documents attached here with the directions and a model for creating word cards. You can follow these for directions and examples, but please put your word cards under the right chapter in this wiki.
